Elon Musk Makes ‘Scotty’s’ Dying Request Come True, Sends Remains into Space
Star Trek’s engineer Scotty has his ashes sent into space on SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket
James Doohan, the actor best known for his role of Star Trek’s chief engineer Montgomery Scott (Scotty), had one request when he died in 2005; that his ashes be launched in space, a service Elon Musk, Founder and CEO of SpaceX was happy to provide.
On Tuesday, after numerous delays, Musk’s SpaceX successfully launched their Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral which carried not only the Dragon spacecraft and cargo for the ISS, but also the remains of several people, including Scotty.
The unmanned Dragon spacecraft is scheduled to dock with the International Space Station (ISS) within the next few days. This launch marks a significant shift in the space program, which historically had relied on NASA and public funding for their program. With the Dragon mission, Musk’s SpaceX has become the first private company to launch a space vehicle to the ISS.
Although the launch was a success, that’s only the first step before reaching the ISS and getting the seal of approval from their potential customer, NASA.
