Ari Emanuel: California must help stop intellectual property theft
WME co-CEO wants Google and other companies to fight piracy
William Morris Endeavor agency co-CEO Ari Emanuel urged Google and other companies in the Silicon Valley to help Hollywood in its fight against piracy Wednesday, while speaking at the AllThingsD-organized D10 conference in Palos Verdes, California, just 30 miles south of Los Angeles.
“We need Northern California to figure out how to keep our intellectual property from being stolen,” he said, according to AllThingsD.com.
Emanuel emphasized the need for balance of power between the technology and entertainment worlds, but said it’s up to technology companies, such as Google, to take a stronger stance against piracy.
“Where Google decides to play on piracy is very, very important for us,” said Emanuel. “And I think they’re kind of going slowly.”
He argued that if Google operated in China but saw its property being stolen, Google would decide to leave China. Emanuel encouraged the internet giant to cut down on theft by filtering out international piracy.
“Look, Google can filter and does filter for child pornography. They do that already. So stealing is a bad thing, and child pornography is a bad thing.”
Emanuel said that people such as Hollywood producer Aaron Sorkin, who also spoke at the conference earlier in the day, and Larry David spend a great deal of time developing their creative content, and tech companies “need to...help us protect that stuff.”
People must also ask Google, Verizon and other tech firms about why they have not yet reached out on the topic of law enforcement to fight online piracy, said Emanuel, when discussing the failed SOPA piracy legislation.
Emanuel also argued that people are watching less traditional TV, noting that as people get older, they seem more willing to purchase pay TV services.
“Glenn Beck has 230,000 paying subs. That’s his fan base. He goes on for a half hour, spews whatever he wants to spew,” said Emanuel. “He makes $23 million, $40 million. That’s a model. But you don’t get Family Guy, Homeland, Entourage for that. Those things cost more.”
