Israeli painter and Holocaust survivor Avigdor Arikha died at the age of 81 from complications from cancer.

Arikha began as an abstract artist but shifted to representationalism in the mid-1960s. He is known for painting everyday things, and wrote and lectured extensively throughout his career.

Much of his work was influenced by his experiences in the Holocaust. According to The New York Times, Arikha was deported by the Nazis from Czernowitz, then in Romania, to a Ukrainian labour camp in 1941. He was 12 years old.

Arikha moved to Palestine in 1944 and served in Israel’s 1948 War of Independence. Though he moved to Paris soon after to study at the École des Beaux-Arts, and only lived in Israel for a short period of time, he considered himself an Israeli artist and maintained strong ties with the country.

Arikha died at his home in Paris on Apr. 29, 2010.
