Jewish Community Outraged by New Zealand Law
The European country banned kosher slaughter.
Kosher meatPic: The Gifted Photographer, FlickrNew Zealand’s recently implemented law under the Animal Welfare Commercial Slaughter Code is banning kosher slaughter of meat. The law states that animals would have to be stunned before slaughter, which makes shechita illegal.
The code took effect on May 28 and leaders of the Jewish community are displeased with the decision. “This decision by the New Zealand government, one which has a Jewish prime minister, is outrageous,” said Rabbi Moshe Gutnick to The Jerusalem Post, acting president of the Organization of Rabbis of Australasia. “We will be doing everything possible to get this decision reversed.”
New Zealand belongs to a list of other European countries that have stipulated a ban against the Jewish slaughtering ritual. Iceland, Norway and Sweden have also outlawed shechita.
