Amanda Martinez Follows Her Roots with World Cup Anthem
The song is in honour of the South Africa-Mexico match -- the homelands of her mother and father, respectively.
Amanda Martinez is following her roots – literally – with the song she wrote in honour of the World Cup’s opening game.
That’s because the match takes place between South Africa and Mexico – the homelands of her mother and father, respectively.
"I am counting my blessings for this dream come true and would like to acknowledge Valery Yiptong at Canada's High Comission in South Africa, Marco Lopez of Relay World Wide, Terry Wickham of Destination Southern Africa, and my tour manager Jaclyn Tam of Sola Records for making this trip possible. Gracias also to my co-composers and bandmates Drew Birston, Kevin Laliberte, and Rosendo Leon and special co-lyricist Michelle Martinez for joining me on the journey and of course my parents who the song is dedicated to."
She will perform the song “Suenos Posibles” (“Dreams Realized”) at three concerts over two days in Johannesburg. Jazz singer Sophie Milman will replace her at the Alli’s Journey fundraising concert at Koerner Hall on June 9.
Prior to leaving, Martinez will perform in Kitchener’s Our World Festival on June 5.
The World Cup runs June 11-July 11, 2010. For more information and to listen to the song, visit www.amandamartinez.ca.
