Love is a Poverty You Can Sell was a hit at the FringePic: Soup Can Theatre

The Toronto Fringe Festival, highlighting some of Toronto’s best under-the-radar theatre, has come to an end. Shalom Life narrowed down the roster to those that would be of interest to the Jewish community. As it turns out, two shows we suggested – A Freudian Slip of the Jung and Act Now! – as well as a musical cabaret about German-Jewish composer Kurt Weill are being held over for further viewing. If you haven’t had a chance to see them yet, you still have time!

A Freudian Slip of the Jung by Sean Fisher tells the story of a chance meeting between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud that escalates into disaster. Read our review here.

Act Now!, with music by Daniel Abramson, sends-up TV infomercials with the story of an out-of-work actor who applies for a job as a product demonstrator. Read our review here.

Love is a Poverty You Can Sell celebrates the genius of German-Jewish composer Kurt Weill through a night of “song, story and sin”– the production showcases the bold and naked theatrical style he and writer/director Bertolt Brecht pioneered with the spectacle of traditional musical theatre, all within the setting of an authentic 1920s European cabaret. Love is a Poverty You Can Sell includes musical selections from Weill’s best known works such as The Threepenny Opera, The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny and Street Scene, as well as numbers from shows shaped by Weill’s artistic legacy, such as Sweeney Todd, Cabaret, Chicago and The Black Rider.

Best of the Fringe runs until July 24 at the Berkeley Street Theatre and until July 31 at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, Studio Theatre. For more information and a full list of shows, visit www.fringetoronto.com/fringe10/bestoffringe.html.
