Art Exhibition of Jewish Artists Coming to Canada

The Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco recently announced that it will debut an exhibition in the fall featuring the works of renowned female Jewish artists. Coming in October is “Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women,” a showcase of some of the best works of well-known cartoonists.

“We’re very pleased to be the first venue for this exhibition,” said Cartoon Art Museum curator Andrew Farago. He said the museum immediately jumped on board when the list of artists involved in the exhibition were revealed.

The display features some famous artists from the ‘70s and ‘80s, as well as up-and-coming cartoonists of the present time. Jewish weekly newspaper The Forward also published an eight-page spread of the exhibition’s catalogue in its latest edition, along with a story written by the late American Splendor artist Harvey Pekar.

The exhibition also includes Canadian cartoonists such as Bernice Eisenstein, Miriam Libicki and Sarah Lazarovic. Eisenstein is the artist behind the graphic novel memoir I Was a Child of Holocaust Survivors. Libicki was recently at hand for the Toronto Comics Arts Festival this year, while Lazarovic’s work can be seen in The Toronto Star and the Ottawa Citizen.

The good news for Canadians is that the exhibit will also be displayed at the Koffler Centre for the Arts. “Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women” will be in the Cartoon Art Museum from October 21 to January 2011, after which the exhibition will move to Toronto’s Koffler Centre.
