Students Put on Holocaust Related Play
Play based on Bernice Eisenstein’s memoir runs till Saturday at Theatre Erindale.
A group of theatre students in Toronto has put on a unique play centred on the Holocaust.
Students in the theatre and drama studies program at University of Toronto at Mississauga have adapted Bernice Eisenstein’s memoir “I Was a Child of Holocaust Survivors” into an exciting play which opened on November 12 at Theatre Erindale in Mississauga.
“It’s about Bernice’s journey through her life, from young until present, and how she tries to find her identity growing up in a world where she has never been personally touched by the Holocaust but her parents and her relatives and her family were all in it, and they grew up trying not to tell her about it,” said group member Brittany Kay. “It’s about her story and her struggle growing up trying to find her own identity through her parents’ eyes.”
Under the direction of Ralph Small, the third year class of theatre and drama studies wrote the memoir into a play entitled “A Child of Survivors”. As Kay explained, the play is not all sadness and emotion as one might expect from a play about the Holocaust. “There are very sincere and sad moments in the play but a lot of it is very funny and witty which you wouldn’t typically find in a Holocaust related show, which makes it very interesting to watch.”
“A Child of Survivors” runs through Saturday, November 20, at Theatre Erindale. Show times are:
November 18 @ 7:30 pm
November 19 @ 8:00 pm
November 20 @ 2:00 pm & 8:00 pm
Tickets: Adults: $15.00, Students and Seniors: $10.00. UofT Student tickets may be available at the door.
