Daryl Hannah arrested during White House protest
Actress and Environmentalist Daryl Hannah was arrested outside the White House on Tuesday
Daryl Hannah, actress and environmentalist, was arrested outside the White House on Tuesday during a protest against a proposed $7 billion oil pipeline.
Hannah was arrested for “failure to obey lawful order” after the police gave her and other protesters several warnings and directions to leave the property. The actress was released from custody after paying a $100 fine, said U.S Park Police spokesman Sergeant David Schlosser.
The protest has been labeled “The Tar Sands Action Protest” after efforts to block the proposed Keystone XL pipeline project that will bring oil sands petroleum from Canada to refineries in Texas. More than 70 people were arrested on Tuesday during the event.
Daniel Kessler, spokesman for the Rainforest Action Network, said that Hannah was arrested in a sit-in outside a gate at the White House after she refused police orders to leave.
This is not the first time Hannah has been arrested for standing up for what she believes in. On June 13, 2006, Hannah was arrested for her involvement with over 350 farmers and their supporters who were confronting authorities trying to bulldoze the nation’s largest urban farm in Los Angeles. Hannah chained herself to walnut tree for three weeks on South Central Far to protest against the property’s new owner who wanted to convert the farm into a warehouse. Additionally, in 2009, she was arrested in a protest against mountaintop removal in West Virginia.
Hannah is best known for her roles in Splash, Kill Bill, and Blade Runner. She lives “off the grid” with a home that runs entirely on solar power and built with green materials. Her car runs solely on bio-diesel.
