Comedian Todd Glass Comes Out as Gay
The veteran comic outs himself on Marc Maron’s ‘WTF’
Todd Glass, best known for his regular appearances on Last Comic Standing, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Louie, and Late Night with Conan O’Brien, outed himself on Monday during an episode of ‘WTF with Marc Maron’.
According to Glass, his friends and family have always been aware of his sexuality, but he had decided up until this point to keep this information out of the public sphere. His decision to announce his homosexuality was inspired by recent news of troubled teens committing suicide because they were gay.
“I cannot listen to stories about kids killing themselves any longer and not [think], 'When are you going to have a little blood on your shirt for not being honest about who you are?'” Glass said on the podcast.
Glass also explains that fear prevented him from making his sexually publically known.
“As much as I told myself coming here, 'Get over it. It's not a big deal.' That is true. I needed to tell myself that – fucking stop it. But also I can spend a lot of time saying, 'This didn't happen overnight.' This happened, you know, 25 years ago when I started to not be honest with who I was.”
“I don't think tomorrow if I was somewhere – you know, whenever you need a fake scenario, I can never come up with it – but you're somewhere and someone says, 'Who's this for?' I'm not going to be able to be at the department store and go, 'Oh, it's for my …'”
“Roommate?” Maron asked. “Is that what you would say?”
“No, I won't say that, because that's embarrassing. I will not be that guy. You know these guys, they're like 70: 'My roommate.' 'It's my accountant.' Accountant? Really? He lives with you? 'We're very close.'”
Glass has been in a non-public relationship with a man for 15 years. The comedian has even kept his sexuality and partner secret from fellow comics and friends.
On ‘WTF”, Glass and Maron also discussed gay rights in America, their disgust with GOP candidates (specifically Santorum and Perry) for using homophobia to gain voters, and the plight that gay teens are experiencing with bullying.
"I always say, if you are homophobic, you better be positive you're right. Because is it going to blow [that] all these kids are killing themselves, and ... that in 20 years ... you get to write a book about how wrong you were. They're dead. So why don't you have a soul-searching moment now? Go into your house, shut the door, and make sure you're positive that you're making kids feel like crap for no good goddamn reason."
Todd Glass hosts his own podcast entitled “The Todd Glass Show” on the Nerdist Network.
