Ryan Seacrest, Mark Cuban Launch New Entertainment Channel
American Idol host to head AXS TV
Ryan Seacrest has teamed up with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and talent agencies CAA and AEG to launch a new entertainment channel.
Called AXS TV (and pronounced ‘access’), the channel is a reboot of Cuban’s HDNet. It aims to cover live entertainment events such as film premieres, festivals, concerts, and red carpet events. Seacrest will not actually appear on air, but his production company is to provide content; programming will also draw from AEG’s national presence at venues that host such events.
With its 24/7 entertainment coverage, AXS was referred to by Cuban as the “SportsCenter for pop culture and music.”
The Wrap reported that CAA, AEG and Seacrest had been in talks to start Seacrest’s own cable network since 2010, but had not finalized plans until Cuban’s recent involvement.
According to the Los Angeles Times, HDNet currently airs in 27 million homes and is expected to expand to 35 million. The exact terms of the agreement are not disclosed as of yet.
