Kate Hudson’s had a busy week.

The Academy Award-nominated actress announced her involvement in not one but two upcoming films, neither of them close to the rom-com genre she typically gravitates toward.

Hudson’s first new project is DreamWorks Animation’s Me & My Shadow, an original feature film reported to be utilizing a groundbreaking mixture of both CG and traditional animation techniques. The animated film centres around a frustrated shadow (Saturday Night Live’s Bill Hader) that decides to break the rules of the Shadow World by taking control of his ‘owner,’ boring human Stanley (The Book of Mormon star Josh Gad). Hudson will play the role of Heidi, Stanley’s real-world love interest.

Also announced was Hudson’s starring role in Everly, a suspense thriller by indie outfit Crime Scene Pictures. Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2) is set to direct. The entire film is set in one room, the down-on-her-luck protagonist’s apartment, as Hudson’s character must fend off assassins sent by her mob boss ex-boyfriend to kill her. The script, penned by Yale Hannon, made it onto 2010’s Hollywood Black List, an annual catalog of Hollywood’s best unproduced movie scripts.

Shadow is slated for a November 2013 release date. Everly will be officially unveiled to buyers at next week’s Berlin Film Festival.
