Israel Says No to Underweight Models
Models must have a BMI of 18.5 to be hired.
Israel’s Knesset just passed a new law banning the use of underweight models in all advertising.
The new law, passed on Monday evening, not only requires all working models to have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 18.5, but requires all images digitally altered to make a model appear thinner to say so in writing in the ad.
Rachel Adatto, a doctor specializing in young women’s health issues, authored the bill.
"This law will send a message to teenagers that being thin is acceptable, but slimness has its limits, and there is such a thing as too thin," Ynet quoted Adatto as saying after the law was passed.
The Likud’s Danny Danon calls the new bill “a knockout in the war against anorexia”. Dan proposed the bill with Adatto, and explained that he was originally contacted about the law by U.S Congress members who are considering implementing something similar.
