Russian Pirated Copy of ‘The Iron Lady’ Depicts Thatcher as a Hitler-Admirer
The Russian translation depicts Margaret Thatcher as a Hitler-lover who wants to destroy the working class.
I often watch foreign films and wonder ‘how close is this translation to the original version?’ Well, let’s hope that the Russian pirated version of ‘The Iron Lady’ is an exception, and not a common example.
Although dubbing pirated films in Russia is quite popular, translations didn’t become popular until a translator named ‘Goblin’ became famous for creating entertaining versions of highly acclaimed films.
In his pirated version of ‘The Iron Lady’, Margaret Thatcher (played by Academy-Award winning actress, Meryl Streep) tells the parliament that she wants to “Crush the working class, crush the scum, the yobs.”
In another scene, Thatcher’s adviser tells her that she “went a bit over the top… one of them [the workers] could be literate and have a television and see everything and tell all the rest… and then rumours would spread that you are a pitiless, heartless bitch.”
The best part of this story is that one of Russia’s top film critics reviewed ‘Goblin’s’ version of ‘The Iron Lady”, believing it to be the original… and gave it glowing reviews.
According to the newspaper, Thatcher is portrayed as a “bloodthirsty, Hitler-admiring leader, whose fondest desire is to destroy the working class.”
‘Goblin’ has been releasing his humorous translated films for quite some time, but this marks the first time one of his versions has caused controversy.
Perhaps next time the highly acclaimed film critic in question should ensure his copy of the film is neither pirated nor fake-translated.
