Leonard Cohen Receives $50k, Gets Feted by Fellow Musicians
The Montreal-born singer/songwriter will receive the Glenn Gould Prize in Toronto.
Leonard CohenOn May 14 at Toronto’s Massey Hall, Leonard Cohen will be feted by a number of famous friends at ‘The Glenn Gould Prize Gala Concert in Honour of Leonard Cohen.’ The musician will a receive $50,000 reward, and will also have the opportunity to grant a $15,000 prize to a young artist of Cohen’s choice.
The Prize Gala event will feature Canadian acts including Cowboy Junkie, Juno-winning singer Serena Ryder, folk singer Basia Bulat, and Leonard Cohen’s son, Adam. The Canucks will be joined by a collection of talented American acts including John Prine and James McMurty. The musical performances will be joined by poetry recitals by Canadian actor Gordon Pinsent, Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo, and Travis Good of The Sadies.
“It is a great honour, sweetened by my love of the work of Glenn Gould, and our collective appreciation of his invigorating and enduring presence in the world of Music and Imagination,” Cohen, 77, said in a statement.
Former governor-general Adrienne Clarkson, Leonard Cohen’s longtime friend, will give a speech at the event.
Cohen is the ninth laureate of the biennial award. The public makes nominations for the Glenn Gould Award, while an international panel of judges chooses the winner.
Previous Glenn Gould Prize winners in pianist, Oscar Peterson, and U.S cellist, Yo-Yo Ma.
