Adam Sandler

There is no other actor in Hollywood who has gotten so much critical scorn while being loved by audiences so much. Adam Sandler’s movies are constantly rated terribly, and the actor has received more Razzies awards (celebrating Hollywood’s worse) than anyone else, but yet audiences everywhere love him and his movies are always a box office hit, even “Jack and Jill” which racked in over $100 million nationwide.

So with “That’s My Boy” having opened on Friday, to terrible reviews yet again, we wanted to look back at Sandler’s top 5 best comedic movies. Which is your favorite Sandler movie?

No. 5 - The Longest Yard

A comedic remake of the classic Burt Reynolds movie from 1974, and staring Reynolds, The Longest Yard stars Sandler as a once famous professional football player who gets arrested, thrown in jail and forced to play football with the other inmates against the guards. The Longest Yard is another Sandler movie which racked in over $150 million in US box office and got terrible critical reviews.

No. 4 - The Waterboy

The Waterboy is about as polarizing as Sandler movies get. Critics really hated it, but audiences everywhere loved it. It’s a story of a simple boy born-and-bred in Louisiana living in the swamps with an overbearing mom (Kathy Bates). That right there is reason enough to watch, but throw in some football, “The Fonz”, and the hotter-than-she-gets-credit-for Fairuza Balk, and you get a classic Sandler flick.

No. 3 - Billy Madison

The winner of an MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance , Billy Madison can be top 1-3 on anyone’s list. It takes Sandler’s childish humor and creates an overgrown rich kid with the mentality of a child who must go back to school, going through K-12 in 24 weeks, in order to get control of his father’s company. Story makes no sense, but few of his movies ever do.

No. 2 - The Wedding Singer

Sandler’s sappiest movie is also his sweetest and one of the funniest. The story is set in the questionable fashion era of the 80s, of which the movie makes sure the viewers are aware of, and follows Robbie Hart (Sandler), the lead singer of a going nowhere band, on a mission to save a women (Drew Barrymore) who he meets and falls in love with during one of his gigs, from a marriage to her horrible fiancé. Hip-Hop grandma is worth the price of admission alone.

No. 1 - Happy Gilmore

In his first movie post-Saturday Night Live, Sandler stars as a Hockey reject who puts his slap shot skills to use on the golf course to save his granny’s house. Filled with memorable and still quoted lines 16 years later, and an epic fight with Price is Right host Bob Barker, Happy Gilmore is as close as Sandler gets to comedy perfection.
