William Shatner Apologizes for Prostitution Joke
Captain Kirk said the town of Ilfracombe was “laced with prostitutes”
When “Weird or What’s” William Shatner appeared on BBC show “Have I Got News For You”, the actor made an offensive comment regarding prostitution about a small Devon town.
While on the BBC show, Shatner was discussing the various towns the Olympic torch would go through with a series of panelists. When he mispronounced the name of one of the small towns, Ilfracombe, guest panelist Charlie Brooker said he made it sound “Deeply sexual” to which Shatner responded “The place is laced with prostitution.”
Ilfracombe’s former mayor, Paul Crabb, contacted Shatner’s agents with a short note reading, “As Captain James T Kirk, Mr. Shatner has been to places where no man has gone before, however, the episode of Have I Got News For You clearly shows he has never been to Ilfracombe.”
“If he came, we could show him that there is no prostitution in Ilfracombe and that it is a lovely coastal town with spectacular scenery and a close community,” Crabb continued.
In an email, reportedly written by William Shatner, he explains that prostitution “commonly means sex for something of value.” The actor goes on to say he “would be hard pressed to believe that sex was not being had in Ilfracombe for something of value, perhaps a lengthy marriage, children or a valuable career.”
So, you may be asking where the apology comes into play?
“In any event, my apologies for having singled out Ilfracombe as a potential haven for prostitution. With you overseeing, I am sure that will not happen,” Shatner writes.
Not much of an apology, but I believe it’s safe to assume Crabb’s sole purpose for contacting the actor is publicity for his town… so I suppose they both win.
