Aly Raisman: America’s New Sweetheart [VIDEO]
As the US Gymnastics team wins gold, Raisman rises to instant stardom
US Olympic gymnast, 18-year old Aly Raisman, wowed international audiences on Sunday during the qualifying round for the women’s all-around finals when she beat out teammate, Jordyn Wieber, for one of the two US spots.
But that win was just the beginning. Over the last two days, Raisman and her team won the Olympic gold for Women’s Gymnastics, her parents have become Internet sensations, the Burlington gym that she trains at has seen countless parents signing their children up for gymnastic lessons, and media frenzy has begun interviewing everyone that has ever met the girl in her short lifetime.
It was Raisman’s winning floor routine that stole the show on Tuesday, but her supportive parents (Ricky and Lynn) are the ones accumulating YouTube hits. During Aly’s routine on the uneven bars, Raisman’s parents were caught by NBC nervously, and dramatically, shifting in their seats. Numerous websites have gone as far as tracking the number of times the couple say “Come on”, “Let’s go”, “Catch it”, and “Stick it” during the short clip. Various reporters and fans worldwide have mocked Ricky Raisman’s loud sign of relief at the end of the routine.
The crowds at Raisman’s gym in Burlington are plentiful.
“Everyone wants to be like Aly,” said Rashawn Harrison, one of the gym’s coaches. “And that’s a good thing, because she’s well-mannered, respectful, hard-working. Kids should want to be like her.”
Her hometown of Needham has strewn countless banners, posters, and decorations throughout in celebration… but it’s not just her friends, family, and neighbors that are cheering for Raisman. The entire world is now a supporter and fan.
This is just the beginning for Raisman. I, along with millions of others, am cheering for her in the women’s individuals… and expect to see her on your child’s cereal box and teen magazine shortly afterwards.
