Top 20 Under 40- Yael Meyer
Age: 31
Yael Meyer’s unique background combined with inborn talent has created the musical tour-de-force she is today.
Born in Chile, Meyer began playing piano at the young age of 5, started writing original music at 8, and learned how to play guitar at 13. Knowing that she wanted to pursue music professionally, she left Chile at 19 to attend music school in Boston.
“It was not one specific moment, but rather a combination of moments that together gave me the courage and strength to embark on this journey,” Meyer explained when asked about the moment she realized music was her calling.
Before moving to Los Angeles, she wrote, produced, and recorded her debut album, Common Ground, hailed by Rolling Stone Chile as “one of the top 50 albums of the year” in 2000.
Twelve years later, Meyer has released two more studio albums including 2011’s Everything Will Be Alright , had songs appear in prime time TV shows including Drop Dead Diva, Private Practice, Life Unexpected, and Awkward, and received international praise from various publications such as SPIN, Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, LA Weekly, and The Jerusalem Post.
Meyer has toured the United States, Europe, and South America, most recently returning to Los Angeles after a month of sold out shows in her native Chile where she performed at Lollapalooza 2012.
Although Meyer is best known to the world for her music, she ultimately wants to be remembered as “a good mother, a good wife, a good daughter, a good grand-daughter, a good sister, a good friend, and a good human being. Someone who did the best she could to do the best she could.”
Meyer is one of those unique artists (and human beings) that find deep meaning and inspiration from every new experience, conversation, and interaction.
“Everything around me is an influence. Life itself. The sun, the wind, silence, love, family, all the experiences we go through, the people I meet, the places I visit. Everyone and everything is an influence and an inspiration.”
Meyer’s Jewish heritage is also a means of inspiration.
“I believe that the wisdom and teachings that have been passed down and handed to us by those who came before us in our tradition are a beautiful and powerful instruction on how to live a life that is in harmony and peace with others, with the world, with nature and with ourselves. I truly believe that we are on earth to represent and reveal the divine and I try to take in and apply these teachings of Torah into my daily life, into every moment and into every action. At the same time whatever I find inspiring and truthful is always something I want to share with everyone around me who might also find value in it, and so naturally it ends coming out through my music as well.”
