Amar’e Stoudmire Named Maccabi Canada Assistant Coach
New York Knicks star joins staff for 2013 Maccabiah Games
NBA star Amar’e Stoudemire has signed on to help lead the Canadian open men’s basketball team at the 19th Maccabiah Games next summer.
Stoudmire, a power forward for the New York Knicks, will serve as an assistant coach on the team in 2013, confirming his commitment last Friday, according to Maccabi Canada’s website.
Stoudemire flew to Toronto, Ont. last weekend to attend the final national tryouts and give his input to head coach John Dore on who should represent Canada next summer in Israel.
Dore had initially reached out to Stoudemire about joining his coaching staff.
Dore has apparently been involved with the Knicks in the past and drove to New York to ask Stoudemire if he would help lead the Canadian men’s basketball delegation at the Games.
“I heard about these games and I know how important they are,” said Stoudemire.
“When I got the call, it was a no brainer for me.”
Stoudemire was last in Israel in the summer of 2010, when he publicly disclosed his ties to Judaism and travelled to the Holy Land to learn more about Jewish culture as well as his own Jewish roots.
The 19th Maccabiah Games are set to open in Jerusalem at Teddy Stadium on July 18, 2013.
