Ajami, Israel’s official selection for the Oscars, has been included on a short list of films from which five movies will become nominees in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

This marks the third year in a row that Israeli films have made the Academy Awards’ short list. Previous films include the critically acclaimed Waltz with Bashir and Beaufort.

Films from Australia, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Peru and Argentina have made the short list as well. This year, 65 countries submitted movies. Members of the Academy are asked to eventually narrow the selection down to five films.

Ajami is a crime drama set in Jaffa. Co-directed by Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani, the film won five Israeli Film Academy Awards as well as an award from the Cannes Film Festival.

“We wanted to show how different people are living in bubbles with totally subjective truths,” shares Shani. “They understand things differently, they feel different emotions and you can see it only if you see many people to see two is not enough to identify with their dreams, their emotions, their frustrations and suffering.”

He says the film has been well received in Israel. “People can really appreciate its realities…they can really appreciate something that is so different from anything they’ve seen before…so we got amazing responses both from critics and the audience,” shares Shani.

Ajami is due for release in several countries. It had its North American premiere in Toronto during the Toronto International Film Festival.
