Hasidic reggae star Matisyahu’s hit single “One Day” owes much of its success to being selected by NBC for use as its Olympic anthem for the 2010 Winter Games.

Matisyahu, who has performed twice during the Games, recently revealed that he had athletic aspirations before deciding to become a musician. “I made that decision when I got kicked off my hockey team when I was 14 for being a pothead!” said the 30 year old reggae singer. “That's when I decided to go with music. I had a little bit of a bad reputation in high school, and my hockey coach wasn't so into that. At the time it really crushed me, it was really hard for me.”

Matisyahu said that he didn’t write “One Day” with the Olympics in mind, but its adoption by NBC has brought him immense joy. “There was a moment I had where we were singing one day, playing one day and I looked out into the audience and saw all the different flags and different countries. I got this utopian feeling, even though everyone is coming together around sports.”

Matisyahu said that “One Day” connects with athletes in particular, due to the fact that they are “healthy-minded individuals and holistic kind of people.”
