After 62 years of independence, Israel is home to 5,726,000 Jewish residents according to CBS. When Israel gained independence in 1948, the population of Israel was 650,000, only 35% percent being native born Israelis. At this time thousands of European Jews, survivors of the Holocaust as well as Jews from North Africa all awaited to immigrate into the only independent Jewish state in the world. Israel’s population then tripled itself in a decade according to the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Despite Israel’s struggle to survive with the staggering increase in population, in only 50 years of its establishment Israel has succeeded in being a technological powerhouse and a world leader of innovation. According to industrialist Efi Arazi, "Israel now has a critical mass in high technology that is far ahead of anything in Europe."

Israel’s technological successes and advancements over the past 62 years include the development of the cell phone created by Motorola in Israel, along with voicemail technology also developed in Israel. As well, most of the Windows NT was developed by Microsoft-Israel along with The Pentium MMX chip technology which was designed by Intel in Israel.

Medical research and innovations have also been attributed to the State of Israel. Israeli scientists have developed no-radiation computerized cancer-fighting equipment.

Some Israeli athletes we are proud of include Israel’s Maccabi basketball team who in 2001 won the European championships, as well tennis player Anna Smashnova who is the 15th ranked female tennis player in the world.

Throughout the years Israel has proved to the world that despite its size, it can and does provide large contributions to the world’s technology, sports, and medical successes. Happy birthday Israel!
