Following IsraAID’s extensive medical program since January 2010 and the recent establishment of its medical clinic in Leoganne, Haiti, the United Nations has declared the IsraAID-TBT (Tevel b’Tzedek) clinic in Leoganne as a Cholera Treatment facility which will receive and treat patients affected by the epidemic.

Funds for the clinic come directly from the $1-million plus Haiti Disaster Relief Fund created by United Jewish Appeal of Greater Toronto on behalf of the people of Haiti immediately after the magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck the beleaguered nation on January 12, 2010.

Initiated in December 2001, IsraAID is a coalition of Israeli and Jewish NGOs (non-governmental organizations) that are active in relief efforts all over the world. Tevel b’Tzedek is an Israeli NGO founded in 2007. UJA Federation of Greater Toronto has supported IsraAID in life-saving efforts following a number of natural disasters.

The Israeli, Canadian and local Haitian medical staff on the ground have been adding dozens of beds and equipment to the clinic, which has been operating as a family medical centre since September.

IsraAID is a coordinating body of Israeli and Jewish NGOs in Israel that provides humanitarian aid worldwide. United Jewish Appeal has previously supported its work following earthquakes in Peru and Pakistan, on the border of Darfur, and after Hurricane Katrina and the recent typhoon in the Philippines.

“We’re proud to partner with IsraAid on this initiative and many others in which IsraAid has demonstrated its extraordinary skill, courage and compassion on behalf of hundreds of thousands whose lives have been devastated by natural disaster,” said UJA Federation President & CEO Ted Sokolsky. “IsraAid demonstrates the true meaning of tikun olam (repairing the world), creating a better world by saving so many lives through remarkable acts of kindness.”

UJA Federation of Greater Toronto is the largest of several IsraAid funders throughout the world.

Haiti’s worsening cholera epidemic has claimed more than 1250 lives with over 20,000 people treated in hospital.
