Family Road Trip Turns Into Horrifying Disaster
Deadly car crash leaves Houston children orphaned. Brothers left paralyzed.
It’s been a tragic week in the United States; a week that reminded us with a good slap to the face, just how precious – and fragile – life can be.
On July 7th, a healthy 39-year-old Texas Rangers baseball fan died after falling about 20 feet onto concrete simply because he wanted to catch a baseball for his 6-year-old son who witnessed his father’s death.
Now comes the news that two young brothers, nine-year-old Peter Berry and his eight-year-old brother Aaron, who one minute for all we know may have been playing “I spy” or singing songs, or perhaps enjoying a DVD during their ride home to Texas from a family vacation when, suddenly, their lives were changed forever in the flash of an eye.
The children's mother Robin, 40, who was behind the wheel, driving her husband, Joshua, the two boys, and daughter Willa, 6, was killed instantly when an SUV veered into her lane on Highway 285 in Fort Stockton.
Her husband, 41-year-old Joshua, died later in hospital.
Willa was left with a broken ankle and arm.
Losing your parents instantly and without warning is bad enough, especially for young children, but, the story only gets worse as both Peter and Aaron were left paralyzed from the waist down and, despite intense therapy, it’s uncertain whether they’ll ever regain the use of their legs.
On July 19, the Berry boys will leave their Texas hospital and make their way to Chicago’s Shriners Hospital, a facility renowned for its work in pediatric spinal cord rehab.
They’re expected to be in Chicago for close to two months while Willa, 6, will stay in Houston.
The support for the family has been tremendous with grassroots initiatives popping up all over the Greater Houston area to raise money for the family. If you would like to contribute, please click here Joshua and Robin Berry Children’s Trust.
