In what was the culmination of an inspiring demonstration of determination, strength and spirit, Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords made a surprise appearance at the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday night.

Giffords’ appearance back to the House floor was her first since a gunman shot her in the head during a political “meet and greet” in Tucson, Arizona back in January, 2011. The attack also left six people dead and 13, including Giffords, injured.

The congresswoman was greeted with a standing ovation as she cast her vote in favor of debt ceiling deal which easily made its way through the House of Representatives, passing by a 269-161 margin.

“It means so much to our country to witness the return of our colleague who is the personification of courage, of sincerity, of admiration throughout the country,” Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California told the House.
And, as if her return to the Capitol wasn’t enough, the morning after her appearance, Giffords, appearing on The Early Show, announced her intention to run for re-election in 2012.
