Barak decides to move Iron Dome to Ashkelon
Decision made in light of 30 rocket attacks in July
In light of the close to 30 rocket attacks fired from the Gaza Strip in July, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has decided that it’s time to deploy the mobile Iron Dome short-range anti-rocket defense system outside of Ashkelon.
The Iron
Dome anti-rocket defense system has proven its worth in the past having
successfully intercepted 9 Katusha and Kassam rockets fired from Gaza
Strip in April.
Since then it has been moved to various cities and towns throughout
Israel where the Israeli Air Force (IAF) is looking for various
deployment sites in the event of a larger scale conflict in the future.
The Iron Dome, which was conceived of following the 2006 Lebanon war, is based on three elements - a detection and tracking radar, a battle management and control system, and the missile firing units themselves. It can take out anything from a missile to a 155mm artillery shell in all weather conditions.
There are currently two Iron
Dome batteries and is expected to receive a third by the end of the
year.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, the most recent attacks from the
Gaza Strip were perpetrated by terrorist groups affiliated with
al-Qaida and global jihad elements, and not by Hamas or Islamic Jihad.
On Friday, August 5, the Israeli Air Force responded to the Gaza
Strip attacks by hitting five targets, including four terror tunnels and
one terror activity base in the central Gaza Strip, as well as another
in the south.
