Occupy Facebook: A New Social Network

Occupy activists and developers are building a social networking platform for the 99%

Occupy protestors have revealed their intent to release a social networking site, in the style of Facebook, for the 99%.

"I don't want to say we're making our own Facebook, but we're making our own Facebook," said Ed Knutson, a web and app developer.

Although the site is still in very early stages, Knuston and his team of activist programmers are discussing the idea publically, having already decided on much of the social network’s function.

Similar to Facebook, the social network (which may be called Global Square) will have status updates, profiles, and private messaging.

The tech-activist team do not trust the privacy policies of mainstream and popular social media platforms. They believe their communications need to be protected, especially when discussing important protests and issues at hand.

"We don't want to trust Facebook with private messages among activists," said Knutson.

"We have found the existing social media to be increasingly restrictive in their functionality," said Jérôme E. Roos, a fellow activist.

"What we need, at this point, is a platform that allows us to radically democratize our global organizational efforts," Roos continued.

According to CBC, some of the site features that have been discussed include; an interactive map that lists all ongoing assemblies around the world, a search option allowing users to find squares, events, and working groups, an aggregated news feed that lists the most relevant status updates shared by the various assemblies, a public and private messaging system, individual ‘pages’ for each local square/assembly, and a way to pose ideas and vote on proposals.

Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and other prominent social media websites have played a huge role in the worldwide Occupy movements. Now, the creators of Global Square intend to create one central space for all important discussions and information instead of spreading the information across an endless number of sites.

A launch date for the new social networking site has not been discussed.
