Former PM of Israel in Hot Water Again
Ehud Olmert Indicted on Bribery Charges
Ehud Olmert, Israel’s Prime Minister from 2006 to 2009, and a former mayor of Jerusalem, has been indicted on charges that he accepted bribes.
The indictment, which was filed on January 5th, accuses Olmert of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars as the Holyland apartments – a luxury housing complex – was being built in Jerusalem during his tenure as the city’s mayor.
Haaretz newspaper is calling this case one of the largest corruption scandals in Israel's history while Olmert denies any wrongdoing and has called the investigation a "witch hunt".
Unfortunately, this is not Mr. Olmert’s first legal battle, as he was previously charged in three other unrelated corruption cases including fraud and tax evasion, for which he maintains his innocence, and has pleaded not guilty. A number of others were also indicted in the Holyland apartment case in which prosecutors claim that millions of dollars changed hands illegally in a series of property deals.
Olmert’s term as Jerusalem’s mayor was plagued by corruption allegations, forcing him to resign from his post rather than be indicted then.
