Gabrielle Giffords to Attend State of Union Before Resigning
Gabrielle Giffords resigns from U.S Congress to focus on recovery
Gabrielle Giffords announced on Sunday that she would be resigning from U.S Congress in order to focus on her recovery.
The representative was shot in the head last year during a congressional outreach meeting in Tucson, Arizona suffering traumatic brain injury. Six people were killed and 12 wounded. Her progress thus far has been nothing short of miraculous. Giffords intends to return to politics once recovered.
"I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona I will step down this week," Giffords posted via YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.
"I'm getting better. Every day my spirit is high. I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country. Thank you very much," she added.
Gifford’s intends to submit an official resignation letter this week, but first plans to attend President Obama’s State of the Union address to congress on Tuesday.
"She's universally admired for qualities that transcend party or ideology - a dedication to fairness, a willingness to listen to different ideas, and a tireless commitment to the work of perfecting our union," Obama said of Giffords in a statement.
"We know it is with the best interests of her constituents in mind that Gabby has made the tough decision to step down from Congress," The President continued.
Over the last year, Giffords has received intensive therapy at a Houston hospital. Giffords had to re-learn basic functions including walking, talking, and eating.
During her farewell YouTube video, Giffords has proven what many thought were impossible. Although struggling for words at times, she is articulate, charismatic, and optimistic about the future.
