Minister Kenney Announces Advisory Council for Holocaust Education Initiative
CIJA President and CEO Shimon Fogel named one of 20 Canadian representatives
Jason Kenney, Canada’s Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism and MP for the riding of Calgary Southeast announced the members of the Advisory Council for the International Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research (ITF) on Thursday.
The ITF is an international organization comprised of 31 member states devoted to Holocaust education, remembrance and research, both nationally and internationally. The ITF was established in 1998 and Canada became a full member in 2009.
It will be chaired by former MP Mario Silva and Senator Linda Frum in 2013.
“I am proud of the leadership role that Canada is taking to further Holocaust education, and combat anti-Semitism together with all forms of racism and xenophobia,” said Kenney in December 2011.
“Both Prime Minister Stephen Harper and I believe that Mr. Silva’s commitment to this important effort demonstrates why he should chair the ITF in 2013.”
According to a press release from the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), the Advisory Council includes 20 members representing major Canadian Holocaust and Jewish organizations, the Council of Ministers of Education Canada, the Canadian-Polish Congress, the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter Initiative and academic experts.
Among the 20 members are CIJA President and CEO Shimon Fogel, Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre for Holocaust Studies’ President and CEO, Avi Benlolo, B’nai Brith Canada Executive Vice President Frank Dimant, League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada’s National Director Ruth Klein and the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem’s Executive Director Yaron Ashkenazi.
Council appointments are two-year terms, extending from March 2012 to March 2014. Meetings will take place twice a year, the first of which was Wednesday in Toronto. “I am confident that the members of the Advisory Council will support Mr. Silva, ITF Chair for 2013, in his important goal of advancing Holocaust education and remembrance—both in Canada and abroad—to combat anti-Semitism and all forms of racism and xenophobia,” said Kenney.
