A total of 205 scholarships were awarded to students studying at the Ben Gurion University campus in Eilat. Funded by UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, with generous support from the Morris Pulver Foundation, the scholarships were handed out at a ceremony held recently on the Eilat campus. The awards were presented by Meir Yitzhak Halevi, the mayor of Eilat; Prof. Miri Amit, dean of the campus; and Bruce Leboff, co-chair of UJA Federation of Greater Toronto’s annual campaign. The speakers described their confidence in the future growth of the campus and wished the recipients success in their studies.

The Jewish community of Toronto has supported the student scholarship program in Eilat since the founding of the campus nine years ago. Annually, UJA has committed to sums in excess of $200,000 to ensure that the vision of making Eilat a university city may be realized.

“Toronto’s scholarship program has become a cornerstone in Eilat’s academic development. In return for the financial support, recipients contribute a total of 1,300 hours every week working with youth-at-risk,” says Richard Summers, UJA Federation’s representative in Eilat. “In this way, the program’s impact is twofold, benefitting both the students and the teens with whom they work. In addition, more than half of scholarship recipients stay in the Eilat region for at least two years after graduation.”

On May 17, a similar ceremony was held at Tel Hai Academic College in the Upper Galilee, at which a total of 73 scholarships were awarded. The ceremony took place in the presence of the Dr. Ze’evik Greenberg, the Dean of Students, Marc Gold, president of Magbit Canada, both of whom addressed the recipients, and Linda Kislowicz the Chief Executive Officer of Jewish Federations Canada –UIA . The scholarships were funded by six Canadian donors -- the Zalkow family of Vancouver; Sam Rothstein; Bob and Helen Coleman of Vancouver; Martin Payne of Fredericton, New Brunswick; Larry and Marlene Cohen of Niagara Falls, Ontario; and Bernard and Edith Ennis of Welland, Ontario.

Magbit Canada enjoys a long-standing and multi-faceted relationship with Tel Hai College. Its scholarship program is one of its most significant philanthropic tools on behalf of young people in the Galilee, and in Israel in general.
