Students at the Catholic University of America Plead for One Minute of Silence
Movement to get Munich massacre recognized at 2012 Olympics gains momentum as US, Germany and Australia join.
Students at the Catholic University of America have joined the movement to get the 1972 Munich Massacre recognized at the 2012 London Olympic games with a moment of silence.
The students have produced a film, a Facebook page and Twitter page in order to build awareness of their initiative.
Their effort follows on the heels of the Canadian Government's unanimous support of the movement, Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird's letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and Israel’s request, made on behalf of the families of the 11 victims, to hold a minute-long moment of silence in London this summer, 40 years after the Israeli athletes were killed by Palestinian gunmen in Munich.
On Tuesday it was announced that the US, Australia and Germany have also joined the global effort.
German Parliament President Norbert Lammert pledged his support in an official letter to Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin. Rivlin solicited his German counterpart on the behalf of two widows of the Munich victims, Anky Spitzer and Ilana Romano.
“That Germany, on whose territory the terrorist attacks were carried out, joined the cause is extremely significant,” Rivlin was quoted by Maariv as saying. “The case for a minute of silence to mark the 40th anniversary of the massacre is a moral cause of the first order.”
So far all efforts have fallen on deaf ears as the IOC has refused to grant a moment of silence, fearing that it would politicize the olympics.
