First Jewish Woman to Hold a WBO Title, Does it Again
Buenos Aires’ Carolina “The Turk” Duer Wins in a TKO
Carolina Raquel Duer, a 33-year-old Argentinean Jew from Buenos Aires and known in boxing circles as “The Turk”, defended her super flyweight champion title for the fifth time on Saturday, July 7th by defeating European champion Corina Carlescu .
Duer was declared the winner by “TKO” (technical knockout) in the fifth round after she had knocked down Carlescu in the fourth round.
The fight, which saw Duer improve her record to an impressive 12 wins and 3 losses since turning pro in 2007, was held on a university campus in La Plata City – a town one-hour south of Buenos Aires known for its stunning architecture, lovely green spaces and vibrant university scene.
Duer - whose parents are Syrian immigrants, attended Buenos Aires’ Jaim Najman Bialik Primary School, Jewish summer camp, was bat mitzvahed at a Conservative synagogue in Argentina, and spent over a month in Israel where she worked on a kibbutz.
