Colorado Killer Was Camp Counselor at Jewish Day Camp
James Holmes worked as cabin counselor at Camp Max Straus
James Holmes, the shooter suspected of opening fire at the movie theater in Colorado, worked as a camp counselor at Camp Max Straus in 2008 in Los Angeles, a camp run be Jewish Big Brothers and Sisters (JBBBS), according to Randy Schwab, the CEO of JBBBS.
“It is with shock and sorrow that we learned of the incident in Aurora. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the families and friends of those involved in this horrible tragedy. On behalf of Camp Max Straus I want to offer our deepest sympathies and condolences,” said a statement from Schwab.
According to Schwab, during his tenure at the Jewish camp, Holmes, who is a Presbyterian, was responsible for the care and guidance of 10 children. Holmes helped the children “learn confidence, self esteem and how to work in small teams to effect positive outcomes,” and he ensured that the children had a “wonderful camp experience” through activities such as horseback riding, swimming, art and sports.
Camp Max Straus is a nonsectarian program for children ages 7-14.
