Israeli forced to Tap Out of Judo Match in His Final Olympic Appearance
35-yea-old Arik Zeezi fails to capture a medal in judo
Arik ZeeviDespite predicting that he would bring home a shiny Olympic medal from London, Arik Zeevi, a 35-year-old native of Bnei Brak competing on Israel’s Judo team, will be going home empty handed after losing his opening match on August 2.
Zeevi was forced into a headlock by Germany’s Dmitri Peters during their 100 kg. match, forcing the Israeli to tap out after 43 seconds in what was most likely his final Olympic appearance.
Speaking to Israel’s Army Radio, Zeevi, with tears streaming down his cheeks, said, “I made a mistake and paid the price.”
In 2005, Zeevi, who won a bronze medal at the Athens Olympics in 2004, was voted the 50th-greatest Israeli of all time, in a poll by the Israeli news website Ynet to determine whom the general public considered the 200 Greatest Israelis.
