United Church Votes to Boycott Israeli Settlement Products
CIJA outraged by decision, which they say deters peace process
“It singles out Israel in a way that is so fundamentally unhelpful that there is nothing redeeming in this set of resolutions that they’ve supported today. “In undertaking this action, the United Church has absolutely disqualified itself from playing a constructive role in advancing peace and reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians.”
An online survey, commissioned by CIJA and Faithful Witness, an anti-boycott group led by a United Church pastor, found that 78 per cent of church members believed the church should remain neutral on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, according to The Star.
Koschitzky called Wednesday’s vote a rejection toward the path of balance.
“In adopting this position the United Church has… chosen to explicitly ally itself with those who formally reject the two-State solution and who deny the historical right of the Jewish people to a homeland,” said Koschitzky. In so doing, they have damaged the Church’s standing amongst Canadians and have profoundly compromised the UCC’s ability to play any constructive role in making a positive impact for peace.”
The Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies said they too were disappointed.
“I don’t know if church members truly understand how utterly offensive and imbalanced this proposal is, or whether a latent anti-Semitism within the church is slowly coming back to life,” said Avi Benlolo, president and CEO of the organization.
