It was only a matter of time before public pressure forced the owners of Hitler, a men’s clothing store in Ahmedabd, India, to change its name.

Hundreds of phone calls from international groups and ordinary people alike convinced Rajesh Shah, a co-owner, that a name change was necessary.

Criticism of the store’s offensive name came from as far and as wide as New York City, but also from local Ahmedabad Jewish community members.

Mr. Shah had explained that he named his store after the nickname of his business partner’s grandfather but that he would change the name so as not offend the Jewish community. In earlier statements he had indicated he would not consider a new name and that if it offended Jews they did not have to shop there.

The turning point for Shah came after two local officials threatened to revoke his license unless he renamed the shop. This was a result of a meeting held recently by Israel’s consul general in Mumbau, Orna Sagiv, with Gujarat state government officials.

The shop is one of a few Indian businesses named after the Nazi dictator.
