Islamophobic Advertisements to be Installed in New York Subway
New York Transit Authority Unable to Block Inflammatory Ads
The
ads which offer inflammatory statements like: “In any war between the
civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Or “Support
Israel
… Defeat jihad,” has drawn ire and contempt from New York City
commuters.
Initially the Metropolitan Transportation Authority blocked the group from putting up the ads. But the Authority lost a federal court ruling on First Amendment grounds.
“Our hands are tied” Aaron Donovan , a Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.
One of the biggest opponents to the construction of an Islamic centre and Mosque near Ground Zero, The American Freedom Defense Initiative was named a hate group by the southern Poverty Law Centre, a nonprofit civil rights organization.
In San Francisco where the same group first installed the controversial ads, citizens there signed a petition urging the ads be taken down immediately. The San Francisco Municipal Transit Authority (SFMTA) also unable to remove the signs completely posted a full sized disclaimer next to the ads condemning the statements made by the American Freedom Defense Initiative.
